Both the iPhone XR and the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max have a face recognition system Face ID second generation. This new improved version of the biometric identifier of Apple should be much faster than the previous version of the iPhone X but … will it be like this?
Face ID speed test between iPhone X and iPhone XS
The Face ID functionality uses artificial intelligence algorithms and the neural engine of the iPhone processor to analyze and recognize the face of users with the TrueDepth camera system.
Along with other improvements implemented in the new A12 Bionic chip of the iPhone XR, the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max we find an update of the neural engine to reach an 8-core version. It is capable of performing 5 trillion operations per second, while the previous version executed 600,000 operations per second on the A11 chip.
From Apple Insider have wanted to test both systems using exactly the same environmental conditions and lighting.
To determine a clear winner between the iPhone X and the iPhone XS with Face ID, they analyzed frame by frame all the images until discovering which facial recognition system is more efficient and faster.
Finally, the iPhone XS won the test 11 times, and the iPhone X managed to tie a total of 4 times. In conditions with poorer lighting, the iPhone XS won absolutely in all tests.
So … Is the second generation Face ID of the iPhone XR, the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max faster? Definitely yes, although the difference is minimal and will hardly be noticed in the vast majority of situations in the real world.
